'Virilha Suada' (loosely translated as 'Sweaty Crotch') blended the Ballroom theme with the energetic atmosphere of Brazilian funk. The inaugural edition exceeded expectations, drawing nearly a thousand attendees.
Funding was secured via the revenue from merchandise sales and a successful fundraiser. Post-event surveys revealed a positive impact and scenario for future editions.
project context
During Carnival in Brazil, it is common for people to gather in the streets for community-led parties. Celebrating the nation's cultural heritage creates an overwhelming experience when, for a few days, the population can experience an environment of democracy, equality, and co-existence despite the country's social problems.
Brasilia, the capital known for its modern urban design, lacks the same recognition for its Carnival traditions. The city's layout has created a social divide, with the elite centralised in the city centre while the suburbs are where the poorest population struggle with fewer resources and investments. This disconnect leaves many citizens unaware or indifferent to social issues residing in the vicinities.
Virilha Suada is a queer Carnival block party that aims to create a space for showcasing talent from marginalized communities within environments where such opportunities are limited. It is a collaborative effort to engage with local elites and create a bridge to bring awareness to unrecognized realities and struggles.
